The beginning of 21st century has found biotechnology to be emerging as a key enabling technology for sustainable environmental protection. Biotechnology is versatile and has been assessed as a key area which greatly impacted various technologies based on the application of biological processes in manufacturing, agricultural, food processing, chemical feed stocks for fuels and a variety of commercial products had grown dramatically in early years, driven by the high price of petroleum, etc. and also the increasing efforts to reduce net emissions of carbon dioxide and the other greenhouse gases. The development of multiple human activities (in industry, transport, agriculture, domestic space, etc.) like the increase in the standard of living and the higher consumer demand have amplified pollution of air (with CO2 , NOx, Sox, greenhouse gases and particulate matter), water (with chemical and biological pollutants, nutrient leachates, oil spill) and soil (due to the disposal of hazardous waste spreading of pesticides). By considering all these issues biotechnology may be regarded as a driving force for integrated environmental protection, bioremediation, waste minimization, bio monitoring and bio maintenance.
